It is no coincidence that two former Black Knight's have become two of the most loyal Patriots of our time!
If you ever wonder if you were fortunate to go to Albemarle in the 1960's - just ask Patsy Herring or me!
I spent 3.5 years at Lane before coming to Albemarle in the spring of my junior year. In addition to being the "new guy", I had most of my classes with seniors because of scheduling differences. Wow - I thought that was going to be tough!
But I was surprised. The seniors "adopted" me immmediately and I enjoyed being a Patriot from Day 1. Linda Crenshaw, Dick Ward, Ticee Brandt, my cousin Donna, Pete Williamson, Loretta's friend Cheri and everyone in Mr. Turner's class - I remember you like it was yesterday. (Well, almost!!)
The summer flew by and it was time for football! Not many people can say that they regularly were pummeled by three Division 1 running backs every day. As a 155 pound linebacker playing against Andy Minton, "Goat" Godfrey and Earl Burton every day, I grew up fast.
The class of '67 was certainly the greatest class to ever graduate from AHS - or any high school. Kathy McCauley's inspiration (does anyone else remember her English theme "Our Guys"), Chris Murray's quiet confidence. Wayne Thomas's intellectual practicality, Sandra Marshall's candor, cheerleader good looks and poetry, Fred Manson's mental toughness, Debbie Bickham's amazing giggle and even more amazing wiggle (if she hadn't broken our prom date, I would have learned to shag), Jerry Taylor's courage and grit, Jimena's mini-skirts ;), Lortetta Childress's wonderful sense of humor (and her ears), and many, many more!
And the underclasses showed such great promise. Linda Burton's creativity and beautiful long hair, Claudia Thomas's football skills, Tommy Viar's dedication to the team, Tom McGraw's athletic ability, Mike Estes's toe, Celie Arnette's seriousness (yeah, right!) and Karen Viar's spirit. I wish I could have stayed to watch them grow up!
It was a wonderful experience! Thank you to everyone who played a part in it.
