In Memory

David Alan Bailey - Class Of 1978

David Alan Bailey, 51, of Crozet, died on Sunday November 20, 2011, at Hospice House after a courageous two year struggle against cancer.

He was born on April 9, 1960, in Ivy, the son of Janice Beddow Bailey and the late Claude J. Bailey Jr. After graduating from Albemarle High School, David worked as a press operator for The Daily Progress for 13 years and for Circuit City as a salesman for two years. He stopped working when late onset of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy placed him in a wheelchair in the late 1990's. David loved music and in spite of the muscular dystrophy he dreamed of performing professionally. He continued to sing and play his guitar for so long as he was able, appearing on the second Saturday of each month at Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet with his friend and fellow guitarist and vocalist, David Ferrall.

He had three major cancer surgeries beginning in October of 2009. He never gave up hope and amazed all the people who took care of him by his constant, good spirits, the gratitude he showered upon them daily and the humble acceptance of his diseases.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jeffrey M. Bailey, Claude W. Bailey, and Daniel B. Bailey.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Michael E. Bailey and his wife, Carol, and their children, Eric, Matthew, Robert and Elizabeth; a number of aunts, uncles; and three dear friends, Scott Snyder, David Ferrall and Bruce Tyler.

The family and his friends give special thanks to the volunteers of Meals on Wheels and the doctors, nurses and aides of the Department of Oncology of the University of Virginia Health Care System, The University of Virginia-Health South Rehabilitation Hospital at Fontaine Research Park, the Rehabilitation Unit of Centra Health Care System in Lynchburg, Avante Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waynesboro, The Cedars at Golden Living in Charlottesville and Hospice of the Piedmont.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, November 28, 2011, by the Reverend Daniel Malcolm at All Saints Anglican Church, 2889 Ivy Road. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center (KCRC), 2270 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903, for the benefit of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic.

The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Teague Funeral Home. Friends may sign a guest register at
