Robert Vance "Butch" Pugh - Class Of 1974

It's with a sad and heavy heart that I inform everyone that Robert Pugh aka "Butch" crossed over the river last night. He now takes his place under the shade of the trees with so many great men of the South that came before him. He will be remebered as a passionate man who loved all god's people. He equally loved the reenacting community with all of his being. Please keep his lovely wife Sheryl Pugh and their son Vance in your thoughts and prayers. They both will need these during this time of mouring. Until I to meet you under the shade of the tree my brother I bid you adieu my friend.

Those who knew Butch witnessed that he lived for his son, Vance. He devoted his life to caring for Vance, assuring that he was safe, but would also live a life enriched with all it had to offer. He was so proud of Vance. I remember Butch's hilarious cards, with threats to call out the Crozet National Guard, getting me through my first homesick weeks of college. I cherish each of Butch's poignant Christmas short stories that always accompanied his holiday card. I will miss our Thanksgiving phone calls where he would spot my former student on tv, now a Rockette, opening the Macy's parade. He would always comment she was the "best", somehow standing out in the precision kickline. He recognized her zest for life. He understood what her performance meant to me as only a dear friend could.

Mayo Carter (Carter) (1974)

My family moved from Charlottesville to Crozet the summer of 1962. When school started I was the new kid in Mrs Jones’s second grade class at Crozet Elementary School.  Butch immediately became my new best friend.  Butch and I pretty much did everything together back then.  Unfortunately in 1966 they opened Brownsville Elementary School and separated us.  We were reunited when we got to Henley Jr. High but by that time while we remained friends,  new friends and different interests were led us in different directions.

It was always special to run into Butch, particularly at our reunions and catch up on each other’s lives.  As Mayo pointed out so beautifully it never took Butch long to start talking about his son Vance.  His love for him came out passionately.

Butch was a good friend when I needed one and remained a friend for life.  I shall miss him.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Thanks for posting this, Mayo.  I had not yet heard this sad news.  Ron said it well in his posting.  Butch was one of my best friends in elementary school, and probably the only classmate whose full name (including middle name) I ever learned or remembered.  I still remember eating lunch with him in the school cafeteria!  Living in Ohio, I have made it to only one HS reunion, and I was so glad to see Butch there and be able to reconnect some with him.  My heart goes out to his wife Sheryl and his son Vance.
