Charles Thompson Vest died peacefully at the University of Virginia Hospital on December 26, 2025, holding his daughters' hands. Tonchie was born at the same hospital on October 15, 1943, though he would be quick to tell you that it was in the original building across the street. He was given his nickname by his older sisters, as he was named for his maternal grandfather, Grandaddy Thompson, whom his sisters referred to as "Grandaddy Tonch". When they saw the new baby, the girls declared, "Well, he is nothing but a baby Tonch" and the name stayed for life.
Tonchie attended The Hill School, Albemarle High School, Methodist College, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He proudly served in the Army National Guard and spent most of his adult life working at the University of Virginia Hospital, in both buildings, first in Medical Records and then in the Office of Admitting. He loved helping people as they navigated their stays at the Hospital, and he indeed helped so many.
Whether at the Hospital, Foods of All Nations, the hardware store, or anywhere else he found himself, Tonchie never met a stranger. He was diplomatic and a friend to all, treating everyone with respect and dignity. As a lover of games, however, he would gladly take your money on the backgammon board, poker table, or golf course. He was a fiercely loyal fan of Virginia sports, a keeper of statistics and facts, and a dedicated volunteer to Meals on Wheels. He remained sharp until his last moments, regaling anyone who would visit with extraordinary stories of Charlottesville and Albemarle lore, and possibly a dirty joke not always appropriate for his wife and daughters.
Tonchie was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Samuel Alexander Vest, Jr. and Elise Thompson Vest; and his siblings, Sarah Vest Izard, Catherine Vest Duffey, and Samuel Alexander Vest, III. Knowing he is reunited with Sam at last is the silver lining of his leaving us. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 57 years, Andrea Sierck Vest; his cherished daughters, Phebe Alexandra "Xannie" Vest and Tarpley Vest Gillespie (Scott); his adored grandchildren, Robert Fletcher Gillespie, Samuel Vest Gillespie, Charles William Gillespie, Owen Alexander Morris, and Phebe Alden Morris; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Annette Rogers and Lindsay Talbott for their exceptional care. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
