Floyd Lee Massey - Class Of 1961

Floyd Lee Massey, a proud veteran of the Unites States Marine Corps, passed away unexpectedly April 2, 2022, in Martinsburg, WV.

He was born on December 29, 1942, in Charlottesville, VA. Floyd was raised in Charlottesville and attended Albemarle High School. After graduating High School, Floyd attended and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1965. While pursuing his degree from VPI, Floyd was a member of the Corps of Cadets and in recent years was inducted into the Old Guard. After graduation, Floyd entered into Marine Officer Candidate School in February 1966, where he earned his commission as a Marine Officer. After commissioning, he travelled to Pensacola, Florida for flight training as a naval flight officer and was assigned to fly the F-4 Phantom as a radar interceptor officer.

Floyd served in Vietnam, flying more than 400 combat missions as a member of VMFA-314, the top fighter squadron in 1969, earning numerous commendations, awards and citations including the Purple Heart. After his tour in Vietnam, Floyd returned back to the states to train radar interceptor officers for combat. Floyd left the Marine Corps, with the rank of Captain, after more than 11 years and went to work as an aircraft maintenance program manager for Naval Air Systems Command. While working for Naval Air Systems Command, Floyd earned the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service commendation. Floyd retired in 1998 with a combined service record of 32 years.

Floyd was a member of the American Kennel Club where he was a judge, dog handler and breeder of Champion Dalmatians.

Floyd is survived by his daughter Marianna (Anthony) Woodard; two granddaughters, Ashleigh Cofield and Brittany Flanary; and one great grandson; special niece, Catherine Grizzle; step grandson, Nicholas Woodard; two brothers Raymond Massey and Roy Massey; one sister, Linda Massey.

Floyd will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, mentor, advisor and a friend to many.

A service honoring the life of Floyd Massey will be held at Eackles-Spencer and Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV, on Tuesday April 12, 2022, at 2pm. The family will receive friends on Monday April 11, 2022, between 6-8 pm at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date.
