Audrey Mae Shackelford (Kent) - Class Of 1959 VIEW PROFILE

Audrey Mae Shackelford Kent, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Audrey was born in Alberene, Virginia on August 31, 1940 and graduated from Albemarle High School in 1959. That same day, June 6, 1959, she married the love of her life, Thomas Aubrey Kent, affectionately known as "Tom Cat." The two met while working at Allied Frozen Food and instantly knew they would spend their lives together. Their 55-year marriage was a testament to their deep love and commitment.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Corinne Shackelford; her devoted husband, Thomas Aubrey Kent; and her cherished daughter, Barbara Kent Madison.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Mike Madison of Palmyra; daughter, Scarlet Kent Kresge (husband Rick Kresge) of Zions Crossroads, Va; her son, Brian Kent (wife Missy Kent) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fl; her two grandchildren, Haley Kent of Nashville, TN and Nic Kent (wife Claire Longo Kent) of Charlottesville, Va, whom she adored with all her heart. Audrey also leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and generosity that touched all who knew her.

Audrey spent 20 plus years working at Smith's Transfer before transitioning to the programs office at the University of Virginia, before retiring to take care of her husband. Known affectionately as "Mrs. Audrey" by the students, she brightened their lives with baked treats, candy, and heartfelt care. Her office became a haven for those needing a break or a smile, and her impact on the students was undeniable. Many will remember her as one of the kindest people they had ever met.

Her greatest joy, however, was her family. Audrey took immense pride in being a mother and grandmother. She loved hosting holiday gatherings, especially Christmas Eve, where she went all out- particularly with desserts -just to ensure that everyone under her roof was happy, laughing, and together. Her face lit up every time she saw her grandchildren or even heard their names, and she loved her role as a grandmother more than anything else in the world.

Audrey also had a lifelong love for animals. She found comfort and joy in their company, often curling up with Kitty Cat on her lap to watch MASH*, her favorite show- always claiming she hadn't seen the episode, despite seeing it more than a dozen times.

Known for her sweet nature and contagious smile, Audrey was a true friend to all. She would gladly give the last dollar in her wallet or offer her time to anyone in need. Though her family and friends will miss her deeply, they take comfort in knowing she is reunited with her "Tom Cat", Barbara, and all of her beloved pets in a place of peace and joy.

A special thank you goes out to all the nurses and doctors who cared for Audrey, and to The Visiting Angels, Legacy Hospice, and Heritage Inn for their compassionate care during her final days.

Audrey will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched with her love, warmth, and endless generosity.
