GARVER, Claude Davis Jr., retired Deputy Commissioner of VDOT, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at age 66. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Davis Garver and Julia Via Garver. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Nancy Holt Garver; daughters, Susan G. Varnier and husband, Christopher, of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Julie G. Kelvin and husband, Hoke, of Mechanicsville ,Va.; grandchildren, Madison Elizabeth Varnier, Stephen Davis Varnier, Kayla Anne Kelvin and Allison Brooke Kelvin; sister, Thelma G. Sullivan and husband, Wayne, of Earlysville, Va.; nephews, Joel Sullivan, of Elkton, Va., and John Sullivan and wife, Tracy, of Alexandria, Va.; nieces, Jill S. Holmberg and husband, Dennis, of Earlysville, Va., and Cathy Sullivan, of Earlysville, Va.; stepchildren, Lewis W. Wright III and wife, Anne, of Midlothian, Va., Laura W. Carnal, of Hot Springs, N.C., and Roger T. Wright, of Richmond, Va.; stepgrandchildren, Abram Harris, Stewart Parrish, Jennifer Wright, Andrew Wright and Erin Wright. Mr. Garver was born June 14, 1941, in Earlysville, Va. He graduated from Albemarle High School in 1959 and received a BS degree in Civil Engineering from VA Tech in 1963, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He served five years in the United States Air Force as a member of the SAC 46th Air Refueling Squadron piloting the KC-135. He retired August 1, 2003, as Deputy Commissioner of VDOT after 40 years of service. He was a longtime member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board and was active in the Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. He earned the title of Professional Engineer. In 2000, he was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni by the Via Department of Civil Engineering at VA Tech. He was a member and deacon of Seventh Street Christian Church, where he served on the board. He was deacon chair in 2007 and went with the mission team to Gulfport, Miss., in 2006. The family will receive friends Friday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Seventh Street Christian Church with a reception to follow. Graveside services will be private.
