Samuel Patteson Clarke (1966)
Rupert Mercer Owens, born in Albemarle County, Sept. 15, 1937, entered eternal life Monday, March 24, 1997, at the University of Virginia Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his mother, Violet Haney Owens of Earlysville, and predeceased by his father, Bernard "Bernie" U. Owens.
In addition to his wife of 36 years, Patricia Smith Owens, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Wyatt E. and Trish B. Owens; and by a sister and brother-in-law, Karen Owens Goss and J. Scott Goss. He will be sorely missed by their children, Barry, Brandon, Ashleigh and Whitney Owens, and Andrew and Sarah Goss; as well as his wife's brothers and sisters; and seven other nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-niece; and numerous aunts, uncles, first cousins and their families.
Employed in various functions for 35 years by Sperry Marine Systems, the last as industrial photographer, Mr. Owens also found time for dedicated community service. He was a lifetime member of Ivy Creek United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served, among many other things, as greeter and usher. He helped shape young lives as a Boy Scout master, and helped improve the safely of his community by serving with the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Department for over 27 years, 12 years as chief and assistant chief. He was an avid reader, tireless outdoorsman and accomplished photographer. The memory of his mischievous sense of humor and unfailing optimism will be cherished by a huge circle of devoted family and friends.
The family will be available to receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
A service celebrating Rupert's life will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 1997, at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church, with interment following at Holly Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Katha Bollfrass, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Dept., PO Box 104, Earlysville, Va. 22936, Ivy Creek United Methodist Church, 674, Woodlands Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22901, or Hospice of the Piedmont, 1290 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.
