Whitelar Wood, Jr. - Class Of 1970

On Saturday, April 24, 2021, Whitelar Sims Wood, Jr., better known as Whitey or Woody, passed away at the age of 70. Born on July 9, 1950, in Charlottesville, Virginia, he was the son of Whitelar Sims Wood, Sr. and Agnes Sprouse Wood. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Mark Travis Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Payne Wood; his children, Tina Wood Stewart (Eric), Jessica Michelle Wood, and Jonathan Whitelar Wood (Rachel); stepson, Reed Slocum; and granddaughter, Erika. He is also survived by his siblings, Jane Wood Towler (Michael), Garland Gregory Wood, Gary Daniel Wood and his "brother", Bobby "Bee" Brown, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Whitey was an extraordinary man who never met a stranger and befriended people from all walks of life. He always wore a smile and had genuine concern for all. If you needed help and he could help, he simply did. His generosity of spirit was boundless.

Whitey had many interests. He was a history buff, had a beautiful singing voice and was a very talented musician, able to play multiple musical instruments. His favorite instrument was the guitar, and he loved performing for the church.

Whitey built his own successful heating and cooling business after retiring from Tiger Fuel. He considered each of his customers a friend. There will be a private service due to COVID restrictions.
