Eldridge Tarleton Roberts - Class Of 1961

Eldridge Tarleton Roberts (E.T.), age 81, passed away at his home with family by his side on October 3, 2023 after complications from multiple strokes.

Born on September 19, 1942, in Charlottesville, Virginia, he grew up on a farm in North Garden, later moving into Charlottesville to raise a family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John E. Roberts and E. Virginia Roberts; his brother, Harry Lee Roberts; and his niece, Deborah Roberts.

E.T. graduated in 1961 from Albemarle High School.  He worked at Brown’s Gift Shop for three years where he developed a love of the finer things such as china and glassware.  In 1965, he chose a career in insurance.  After a year of college and numerous classes at the University of Virginia Darden Business School, E.T. became a Licensed Life Insurance Agent with Prudential where he was a District Manager for 20 years.  He was a member of Life Underwriters and taught courses to other local insurance professionals.  He then opened his own business, E.T. Roberts Financial Services and became well-known in the insurance and financial industry.

He was a lifetime member of the Elk’s Lodge and former member of the Lion’s Club.  He was a member of First Baptist Church from 1970 - 2012 until he rejoined his home church of Mooreland Baptist in North Garden.

E.T. enjoyed traveling with friends and family.  He took many excursions to support his love of golf and belonged to many of the local golf clubs in and around Charlottesville.  He even requested to be buried with his favorite putter.

In 1964, he married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret Anne Mawyer at Moreland Baptist Church.  They were blessed with five wonderful daughters: Sonya Hamilton (Stef), Connie Baranski (Ed), Tina Bolen (Marc), Lisa Wilkins (Will), and Susi Page (Leighton). They have 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

E.T. is survived by his wife, Margaret Anne Robert’s and his five daughters mentioned above; two sisters, Edith Wood and Shirley Clarke (John); and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.  Burial services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 12 p.m. at Monticello Memorial Gardens.  Funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. at Mooreland Baptist Church with Dr. Hugh Litchfield officiating.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the prayers, love and support that was given to them throughout this time.
