Robert Ray Wood - Class Of 1956

Robert was born and raised in White Hall, Virginia, later moving to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he raised his family. Robert was born on July 21, 1939, the son of the late Joseph E. and Ollie Hicks Wood. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gwendolyn Griffin Wood.

He is also survived by his daughter, Ginger Leigh Wood Crowley and her husband, Mike Crowley, of Waynesboro, their daughter, Raeann Elizabeth Crowley of Waynesboro, and his brother, Earl Wood of White Hall, Va.

Robert attended Meriwether Lewis school for eight years, then went to Albemarle High School, when it opened in the fall of 1953. He attended that school as a sophomore and graduated in 1956. During his senior year, Robert attended school for 1/2 days and worked at State Farm Insurance for 1/2 days. After graduating, he continued working as a full-time employee. Robert had worked for 47 years at State Farm Insurance when he retired in 2003.

Robert had a radiant smile and was warmhearted. He made it a point to speak to everyone and thank everyone who was kind to him. Even in the hospital, and on his last days, he thanked everyone and would shake their hand.

Robert cherished his family. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and daughter, going on vacations, visiting family members, getting ice cream and going for drives in the car. When his granddaughter was born, it took his enjoyment of life to the next level. The three of them were the love of his life. Robert shared a very special bond with his son-in-law Mike, from joking with each other and sharing stories to giving him advice.

A graveside service will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at 2 p.m.

As per Robert's request, there will be no family night or viewing.
