William Benjamin Orr, 27, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, after a long and courageous battle with colon cancer.
Ben is the beloved son of Dr. and Mrs. (Betsy) William A. Orr and adored "Brother Ben" of Allison and Catherine Orr (aka Big Al and The Kid).
He was born at Martha Jefferson Hospital on April 9, 1979. Ben attended Stone Robinson Elementary School, Burley Middle School, and Albemarle High School, where he was captain of the track team and the cross country team for two years and a member of the Homecoming Court.
He then attended James Madison University School of ISAT receiving a degree in Environmental Science and alternative energy. After three years working in this field he felt drawn to the health sciences. One of Ben's proudest accomplishments was being accepted into MCV - VCU Medical School. He was to begin in August 2005, until this dreaded disease attacked him.
Ben was a wonderful, caring person and true friend. He possessed many talents with an unusual insight and philosophy. He loved to ski, mountain bike, and help his father on the farm. To know Ben was to instantly like and admire him. He was, and will continue to be, a great source of comfort and wisdom to his friends and family.
So many questions left unanswered. Such a talented life left unfulfilled. He leaves a hole in the hearts of family and friends. Maybe some day we will understand why God called him home so young. The family would like to acknowledge the splendid care given to him by Dr. Gordon Morris and his oncology staff and the wonderful, dedicated nurses of the Martha Jefferson Hospital seventh floor.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Stephen Brown, the Rev. Charles Pickell and Dr. Sam Massey officiating. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 6 until 9 p.m. Saturday, June l0, 2006.
