Linda Lee Beasley (Graham) (1965)
George Barclay Rives Class of 1968
Samuel Patteson Clarke (1966)
He was born June 29, 1947, a son of the late Mary Joan Hodges Rives and the late Alexander Barclay Rives. He was preceded in death by an infant brother Thomas Walker Rives in 1951.
He is survived by three brother, Alexander Lockhart "Sandy" Rives and his wife, Susan Brown Rives, William Cabell "Bill" Rives, and Samuel Barclay Rives and his wife, Agnes Burke Rives; nieces, Caroline Atkinson Rives, Margaret Mayo Rives, Amelie Merridith Rives, Elizabeth Landon Rives; and a nephew, Alexander Meigs Rives. He is also survived by special friends, Linda and David Graham of Williamsburg, Virginia, as well as Larry Green of Charlottesville, with whom he shared an apartment for 20 years.
George suffered from Myotonic Dystrophy and related handicap symptoms all his life. Many with greater aptitude have accomplished less. George graduated from Albemarle High School in 1968. He served in the United States Navy from June 21, 1968 until August 13, 1971. Most of his service was on the USS Arneb, based in the Mediterranean. After being honorably discharged, he worked on the Farmington Country Club golf course for five years. He then worked for the University of Virginia Food Services at Newcomb Hall for 17 years until disability caused his retirement.
In his early years, George enjoyed riding and fox hunting with the Keswick Hunt Club with his family. His favorite swift horse was Tom Thumb. While he was physically able, he enjoyed skiing, as fast as possible. George skiied the Austrian Alps and the Rockies as well as Virginia and West Virginia slopes. George liked bodysurfing and sunbathing on beaches, especially Ocean City, Maryland. He was fond of carnival rides and games, and fireworks, both colorful and loud varieties.
After his retirement, George was an enthusiastic member of the Mary Williams Senior Center on Market Street. His final years were spent at Gordon House.
The family would like to thank management and staff of Gordon House, Hospice of the Piedmont, doctors, Kevin McConnell and William Hammond, the many doctors and nurses who cared for George, and everyone else who showed him kindness and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Mary Williams Senior Center, checks marked in memory of George Rives payable to and mailed to JABA Inc., 674 Hillsdale Drive, Suite 9, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
A graveside service will take place 11 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2009, at Grace Episcopal Church in Cismont with the Reverend Julie Norton officiating.
Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
