Tell us a favorite memory or story from your days at AHS.

I embraced the concept of discipline in H.S. after observing the teachers & especially Mr. Hurt handle what would now be considered minor discipline cases. I do not remember any really difficult situations, even though there were a few, I'm sure.It is tough on educators to teach if there are disruptions -- there were very few in AHS during my 5 years there.
My coaches, Coach Null, Coach King, Coach Raines, Coach Costello, were all extraordinarily talented and caring bunch of men.
There are several fond memories of my time @ AHS : 1. When Mr. Lindsay blew a hole in the Chemistry classroom ceiling while teaching about spontaneous combustion ; 2. When Paul Stacy took several test tubes of grain alcohol from Chemistry lab, drank it, set the school record for the shot put that afternoon ; 3. Winning 3 consecutive state championships in Track & Field ; 4. Having the student teacher from William & Mary tell me that I would never make it through W & M after she found out that I had received a football scholarship ( of course, Coach King set her straight when he heard about it ) ; 5. Coach King doing everything in his power to get me a college scholarship; 6. Winning the District basketball game vs. Buena Vista, @ the VMI fieldhouse, after trailing 30 - 6 at halftime -- won 38 - 36 & went on to beat Staunton 68 - 65 the next night for the championship. Just seeing how happy Coach Null was made all of the practices and workouts worth it. ; Graduating.
The saddest day for me occurred a couple of years later when W & M played a football game in Williamsburg against East Carolina. George Gay, probably the best running back in AHS history, and my AHS running mate my senior year, was playing for East Carolina and sustained a devastating leg injury. He recovered after a lengthy rehab and finished his career at East Carolina, but that injury probably kept him out of the NFL.
