In Memory

Rebecca Jean Kennedy (Burbach) - Class Of 1963

Rebecca Jean Kennedy Burbach, 69, of Charlottesville, passed away on December 23, 2014, after facing down challenges to her health.  Becky was born in Charlottesville and attended Albemarle High School.

Becky spent her career at the Curry School of Education from 1975 to 2008, working across five deans, serving countless faculty and students along the way.  Becky was, and will remain, at the core of the Curry School's heart and soul.  For more than 30 years Becky served the school and university - faculty, students and staff - in perhaps every possible way someone might need assistance or support.  Becky epitomized the meaning of "service" - and truly was a model for all in her capacity to listen, help, treat everyone with respect, and manage the flood of daily incoming with a steady and warm smile.  Becky was welcoming, extraordinarily helpful, and astonishingly selfless working behind the scenes to contribute to life at the Curry School.  Her professional contributions to the Curry School and her dedication to excellence were recognized when she became the very first recipient of the Outstanding Curry Staff Award in 2000.

Becky met the love of her life at the Curry School, Harold John Burbach, who she married 24 years ago.

Becky is survived by her husband, Hal Burbach, her brother, J.R. Kennedy of Troy, and four children: Kelly Zellers of Harrisonburg, Michele Zellers of New York City, John Burbach of Lancaster, New Hampshire, and Julie Burbach Raines of Poughkeepsie, New York.  Becky was blessed with a loving son-in-law, Bob Li, a daughter-in-law, Lisa Burbach, and six grandchildren who were the center of her world: Ella and Jackson Zellers Li, Joseph and Ruth Burbach, Leila and Sarah Raines.

Becky is preceded in death by her parents John Henry and Nelsie Kennedy, as well as Ruth Burbach who passed away at age 9 from Osteosarcoma.

Her ever present smile, twinkling eyes, generosity of spirit and limitless kindness were quite unique and will never be forgotten.  We will remember and appreciate Becky for her graciousness and warmth.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Relay for Life American Cancer Society (www.relayforlife.org), CureSearch for Children’s Cancer (www.curesearch.org), or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www.jdrf.org).

A memorial gathering will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home, 201 North First Street at the corner of Market Street, Charlottesville.

It is always sad to lose an Albemarle High School graduate. Rebecca had many friends. She was a member of the Albemarle High School Alumni Association. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
