“3/10/17 - Woodie was in the Army stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. He had left UVA in his 2nd or 3rd year as he was afraid the war in Viet Nam would be over before he finished school as his father was a LT in the Army during WWII and served in the European Theatre. He went through basic and Officer Candidate School and was headed back to Ft. Benning to get his commission as a Second LT. He was somewhere in NC when late at night he hit a fog bank and as a result his car hit the median and he was ejected from the vehicle striking his head on the pavement. He suffered brain damage as a result and was in a coma for several months. We went to see him at McGuire and spent time with him. He told us about leaving UVA and going in the Army. We also visited with him and had him to our home several times once he was back in Charlottesville. He improved for a while and then digressed. As you may know, Pat and Woodie went from 1st grade all the way through High School together. He was indeed a fine young man and a good friend. Regards, Courtney and Pat”
