Doris Jean Smith (Wood) - Class Of 1955

Doris Smith Wood, 81, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2018, after a brief illness.

She was born on June 27, 1937, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to the late Lewis Hartwell Smith and Sarah Catherine (Krantz) Smith.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James "Jimmy" Hartwell Smith.

Her family moved to Ivy, Virginia, when she was a young girl, where she attended Meriwether Lewis School. She went on to graduate from Albemarle High School in 1955.

She began her working career at CH Williams in downtown Charlottesville in 1953 while a junior in high school. She later worked at Harper Motors in Charlottesville for several years. Doris spent most of her career at the University of Virginia where she worked in the Student Financial Services office. She retired from the University of Virginia in 2002 after 31 years of service.

Loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Dot always enjoyed being with her family. Holidays and birthdays were always an occasion to attend gatherings with her brothers and sisters and her extended family. Over the years, Dot often attended UVA sporting events with family to cheer on the Wahoos and she always followed the teams on TV. She was also a member of the Elks Lodge 389 Doe Club.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Earl Edward Wood, of Albemarle County; a son, Earl Edward "Eddie" Wood II and his wife, Rachael, of Kailua, Hawaii; a grandson, Peyton Alexander Wood of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a brother, the Rev. Cecil Smith and his wife, Sharon, of Piney View, West Virginia; two sisters, Frances Morris of Earlysville, and Patricia Jones and her husband, Vernon "Bill", of Earlysville; and an extended family of nieces and nephews.

The family will welcome friends at Hill & Wood Funeral Service from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019, at Hill & Wood Chapel in Charlottesville, Va. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville.
