Wilmer Eugene "Bill" Leatherman

Bill was a 1958 AHS graduate, a Hall of Fame athlete, a soldier and an outstanding coach who developed championship teams year after year. He attended Ferrum Junior College where he played basketball and baseball and was inducted into the Ferrum Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Milligan College in Tennessee where he played two years of basketball and baseball.  Bill received his Master’s Degree from Lynchburg College and coached high school basketball in Bedford and Harrisonburg, Virginia.  He was assistant coach for several years at James Madison University, helping to lead them to the NCAA tournament three times.  

In 1985, Bill became head coach at Bridgewater College where he stayed until his retirement after the 2007-2008 season.  He led the Bridgewater Eagles to their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.  Bill was named ODAC Conference Coach of the Year four times and South region four times.  Bill was honored with the Guardians Award for Advocacy by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.  He holds the career Bridgewater record with 335 wins and was inducted into the Bridgewater Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.  Bill is active in his church in North Carolina and holds clinics for the Recreation Department.  He has authored several books and served as a part-time scout for the Major League Cincinnati Reds baseball organization.
