Margaret (Fowler)

Margaret Frances Poats Fowler, 99, of Charlottesville and Crozet, Virginia, died on Friday, September 30, 2016, at her residence. She was born in White Hall, Virginia, on February 13, 1917, daughter of Mary Shepherd Black and Louis J. Poats.
 
A graduate of Madison College and post-graduate of the University of Virginia, she taught science for over 30 years in Virginia high schools, principally at Albemarle High School. An ardent hiker and enthusiastic traveler, she was endlessly curious about other people, places, cultures and historical eras, and loved to share her discoveries and stories.
 
She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Walter E. Fowler; her daughter, Carey Fowler Rubin; and her seven brothers, Nicholas, Louis, Bob, Ross, Philip, Frederick and George Poats. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Margaret Shepherd Fowler and son-in-law, Sheldan Collins, and by many beloved nieces and nephews.
 
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at The Lodge at Old Trail, 330 Claremont Lane, Crozet, Virginia.
 
 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to James Madison University's scholarship fund, or to The Ocean Conservancy.
