Mary Ellen Davis (Sprouse) - Class Of 1976

Mary Ellen Sprouse, 63, of Charlottesville, Va., passed away peacefully on May 8, 2021, after her courageous battle with brain cancer.

She was born in 1958, in Charlottesville, Va. She attended Albemarle High School, and received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia.

Mary Ellen was quite the outdoor enthusiast, whether it was tending to her beautiful gardens and plants, horseback riding and fly-fishing through the Thorofare region in Yellowstone National Park, or visiting the mountain streams in Virginia. She had a pioneer's spirit and was always trying new things. Her hobbies included playing the violin, researching genealogy, calligraphy, photography, fly-tying, cooking, and drafting for residential houses which she turned into a business. She especially loved spending quality time with her grandchildren, and attending UVA baseball and basketball games. Mary Ellen was proud of her Irish heritage. She had a strong bond with her aunts, uncles, and cousins "across the pond", and enjoyed her multiple visits.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Roger Sprouse of Charlottesville, Va.; daughter, Shawna McCall and her husband, Drew and their two children, Colin and Jillian, of Alpharetta, Ga.; parents, Joseph and Theresa Davis of Charlottesville, Va.; sisters, Cathy Davis and Anne Welch of Charlottesville, Va.; brother, Patrick Davis of Richmond, Va.; and nephew, Patrick Welch of Raleigh, N.C.

The family is especially grateful to all her caregivers, Dr. Fadul, Amanda, Ellie, and Diana of the medical team at UVA; Kelly, Tracy, and Nashell of Hospice of the Piedmont; and their amazing neighbors on Kelsey Drive. Special thanks to Tosya of Just a Little Help; Mary Ellen's high school friends whom she loved dearly, who visited each Sunday afternoon bringing dinner and spending time reminiscing - Nancy, Michelle, and Kathy, a friend since childhood. Another special thank you to Sam, Cindy and all the Craig Builders staff.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Incarnation, Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 2954 Ivy Road, UVA Emily Couric Center, or the Glioblastoma Foundation.
