Johnson Obituary
Patricia Ella Ballard Johnson (a.k.a. Patsy, Pat, Mom, Nana) passed away on Tuesday September 9 in Staunton, VA with her husband and children at her side. Born and raised in Whitehall, VA at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, she was a calm, kind, and gentle presence in the lives of many. Family was at the heart of her life: she was a devoted wife, caring daughter, loving mother and grandmother.
Born on January 24, 1945, Pat graduated from Albemarle High School in 1963 and Radford College in December 1966. She married Andrew Herron Johnson on January 14, 1967. They started a family in Charlottesville but resided in Scottsville for most of their married life. Pat taught at Clark and Jackson-Via Elementary Schools in Charlottesville. She later worked for her husband's car dealership and towing business in Scottsville, then a mortgage company and State Farm Insurance in Charlottesville. She was an avid gardener and a great cook; she enjoyed walks, the occasional camping trip, floating on the James River, and passing on bread making skills to her grandkids. Pat was a Pink Ladies volunteer at Martha Jefferson Hospital and a long time member of St. Anne's Parish in Scottsville, serving as a eucharistic visitor, a vestry member, and the first female Senior Warden.
Pat is survived by her husband, Andrew Herron Johnson of Staunton; her children, Phillip Johnson and his wife, Sarabeth of Staunton, Will Johnson and his wife Caitlin of Crozet, Laura Glover and her husband, Chris of Barrenridge; and her sister, Kimberly Shaw of Hermitage. Pat had 10 grandchildren, Abigail, Katherine, Caleb, Trevor, Daniel, Ryan, Casey, Kelsi, Drew, and Ella, and two great grandchildren, Elesen and Leland. She was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Willis P. Ballard of Whitehall.
A memorial service will be held at Aviva Baldwin Park in Staunton on Wednesday, September 24 at 3:30 p.m. and a burial service will be held at Mount Moriah Church in Whitehall on Saturday September 27 at 2 p.m., all are welcome to attend either service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in loving memory of Pat Johnson to either Legacy Hospice (https://www.legacy-hospice.com/make_a_donation.php) or The Next Child Project (thenextchildproject@gmail.com; 288 Old Goose Creek Rd, Fishersville, VA 22939).
