John Martin IV - Class Of 2010

John Harvie Martin IV, 30, of Albemarle County Va., died on Sunday, August 7, 2022, after a long struggle with substance abuse disorder.

Harvie is survived by his beloved daughter, Autumn Jane Martin; his parents, Owen and Walter Jaeger, III, and John Harvie Martin III; his siblings, Reynolds Martin Smith (Carter), Candace Lindenzweig (Robert), Luke Martin, Kate Martin, Matthew Jaeger, and Erica May (Patrick); special cousins, John B. Murray, III and William H. Murray (Lauren), and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jane Reynolds Murray, John B. Murray, John Harvie Martin Jr., and Evelyn Martin.

Harvie never wanted to be defined only by his addiction.

He was so much more than this brain disease. Addiction is scary, it is ugly, it is an epidemic. Harvie struggled deeply with guilt and shame. His regrets were many but nothing haunted him more than the time missed with his daughter.

Harvie was most at home in fields, on mountain tops, beaches, lakes and streams. He was a superb woodsman, hunter and avid fisherman. His cousin, William, shared how Harvie looked out for his own and would have done anything for them regardless of the consequences. His close friends would say the same.

The best of Harvie lives on through his daughter, the greatest gift he could leave us. He will be remembered for his brilliant sense of humor, contagious laugh, and unforgettable smile. He had a tender heart even during the darkest of times. His generosity knew no bounds. Harvie loved his close family and remained grateful for our support. We are thankful for the wonderful memories we have of Harvie during periods of recovery. These memories will be cherished all the rest of our days. We hope our boy finds that big buck traveling the back roads and deep woods.

His family asks if you know someone struggling to please reach out, lend a word of support and encouragement. Educate yourselves on addiction to understand that beneath it all is great suffering.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2022, at the Hill & Wood Greene Chapel, 15075 Spotswood Trail, Ruckersville VA 22963.
