George Allen Thompson Jr - Class Of 1977 VIEW PROFILE

On November 30, 2021, 63 year old George Allen Thompson Jr. passed on to his eternal rest.

He was surrounded by his loving husband of 28 years, Daniel D. Rowley, sons, Zavyon and Damion, family, and friends. It was a peaceful transition.

He began life's journey on October 26, 1958, in Albemarle County. He was the youngest born to the late George Allen Thompson Sr. and Anne Walker Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Diane W. Perry.

Remaining to cherish his memories are his sisters, Linda W. Gray and Jacqueline E. Brown; brother, Arthur F. Walker; sister-in-law, Renée W. Walker; aunt, Marie W. Mickens; uncle, Warren Jackson; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends.

George was reared in a strong, faith-filled family. In 1977 he graduated with academic honors from Albemarle High School. George was the first African American Class President, Drum Major, and Leader of the Marching Band at AHS. He cherished being the Drum Major for his high school marching band.

His education continued at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, where he was a college cheerleader, university tour guide, and a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In 1983 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

His early professional career included working at Manpower and the University of Virginia Health System's Human Resources Department as a health care provider recruiter. At the time of his death, George worked in the Patient Experience Department as a Front Door Team Lead. He was devoted to assisting patients and treated them with compassion.

In the larger community, George involved himself in civic outreach programs, including volunteering for Charlottesville-Albemarle Juvenile Domestic Court and serving on the Charlottesville Senior Center Board of Directors. He also supported AHS Class of 1977. On October 20, 2018, he was honored to speak at the University of Virginia "Double Take" event for President Jim Ryan's inauguration. His presentation highlighted his ancestors; their trials, tribulations, and triumphs in an era of civil unrest, while concurrently inspiring others to unite and combat all forms of discrimination. He unified people with his words and positive actions.

At an early age, George accepted Christ and was an active member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Browns Cove. He was a faithful member and served as an usher, a member of the choir, and Chairperson of Men's Day.

George was a person who loved life. He was an avid UVA HOOS fan. He enjoyed the opportunity to travel while exploring diverse cultures, foods, and entertainment. He had a passion for sharing his knowledge in health care, leadership, and African American history, primarily within Charlottesville and Crozet. At many social events, it was common to see dapper George with his trademark bowtie.

George will be missed but never forgotten. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support received since George's passing.

Family night will be held from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday, December 10, 2021, at Hill and Wood Charlottesville Chapel. A funeral service will be held at Crozet United Methodist Church, 1165 Crozet Ave., Crozet, VA 22932, at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 11, 2021, with a reception immediately following. Burial will be private.
