Phebe Jane Vanderveer (Truslow) - Class Of 1958

Phebe Jane Vanderveer Truslow, age 78, and longtime resident of Crozet, Va., passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2017.

Phebe was a devoted wife to her husband, James, celebrating 55 years of marriage in May. She was a loving and caring mother for her two sons, Doug and Paul. She was the life-long, trusted advisor, and protector of her five younger siblings, Barbara, John, Charlie, Mary, and Ronald. Her intellect, wit, wisdom, fierce loyalty and loving heart were an inspiration to her entire family.

Phebe was born June 14, 1939, in Sevierville, Tenn. As a child, her family followed her father's business pursuits to Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Niagara Falls, N.Y., before settling down in Afton, Va., where she spent her youth. Phebe graduated from Albemarle High School in 1957, then attended nursing school at Martha Jefferson Hospital, where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She started her nursing career in the neonatal ward at MJH, then moved to the Emergency Room at Waynesboro Hospital. While working in the ER, she met and married James, and started her own family.

When her boys were young, she moved on to ACME Visible Records in Crozet where she spent 25 years as the Industrial Nurse. After leaving ACME, Phebe ran her own Adult Care Home in Yancey Mills for a few years, after which, she returned to work at MJH as a Home Healthcare Nurse, providing healthcare for patients around Albemarle County. She retired in the late '90's due to a short-term illness, and stayed home to take care of her elderly Mother. Phebe spent her golden years gardening, beach vacationing, and spending as much time as she could with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, and family.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Franklin Vanderveer; her mother, Veatrice Lou Parton Vanderveer; and her brother, John Vanderveer.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, James Truslow, Jr.; her sons, Paul and Doug; their wives, Kay and Sandra; Paul's children, Kaitlin and Luke; Doug's children, Ashley and Matt, and Matt's wife, Cathleen and son, Colin. She is also survived by her sisters, brothers and their spouses, Barbara Sampson, Charlie and Carolyn Vanderveer, Mary Gibson, Ronald and Barbara Vanderveer; and all their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being coordinated by Anderson Funeral Services in Crozet, Va. The graveside funeral will be held at Hebron Baptist Church, in Afton, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2017.
