WALTER WHITE

Walter's nominator said, Walter White, a wide receiver for the Mavericks in the junior college days of 1971-72, entered the Colorado Mesa University Hall of Honor in 2013 as part of Mesa’s 90th anniversary homecoming festivities.  After two good seasons at the University of Maryland, In 1973 he had 27 receptions for 422 yards and rushed once for 22 yards.  In 1974 he added 32 receptions for 508 yards and rushed 10 times for 116 yards.  Both seasons his average yards per catch was 16, quite remarkable for a tight end. Walter White was drafted in the 3rd round, 78th overall, by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1975 NFL draft.  On his first play in the NFL in 1975, White caught a 69-yard touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos. He’s third in Chiefs history for catches by a tight end (163) and receiving yards for a tight end (2,396), and was the team’s rookie of the year in 1975.  Walter scored 16 touchdowns in the National Football League. Walter is proof that good guys can be good football players.

Walter White has never forgotten his high school days at Albemarle.  He was a standout on the football field,  the basketball court and on the track.  AHS Principal Benjamin Hurt remembers,  "Walter was a good student and I remember watching him playing basketball.  He was a good person.  Walter just called me last week to say hello.  I think he is now living in Kansas City.  He was in the class of 71."

After retiring from the NFL in 1979, Walter White helped establish the Chiefs Ambassadors to raise scholarships for area student-athletes. He’s also reconnected with Mesa, working with the CMU Football Chapter to raise scholarship money. He’s been a driving force in the Football Legends and Celebrities golf tournament, CMU coach Russ Martin said, and it has raised more than $145,000 in scholarship funds the past two years.  Walter has served on the Kansas City Crime  Commission. The Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers and remains Honorary Chairman.  Walter still lives in the Kansas City area and is Vice President of the Trust Department of Commerce Bank.

George Foussekis, a former Lane High School and Virginia Tech star and a coach at the University of Maryland when Walter played there told us, "Walter was a good person on and off the field, comes from a great family, tough competitor, high character, successful banker, involved in community charity work and successful in NFL.  At Maryland, Walter was nicknamed Sweetness."
