Harriet Anna Pankey - Class Of 1978

Ms. Harriet Anna Pankey passed away on Tuesday March 1, 2022, at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. Harriet was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 30, 1960, to the parentage of Dr. Titus Pankey Jr. and Dr. Anita Rae Pankey.

She was raised with a unique experience of exposure. In addition to having her parents as role models, she had her grandmother, Mrs. Harriet B. Smith as well. She grew up learning from the rural area of Stony Point, Virginia, as it existed during the sixties and seventies. As well she learned from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Harriet graduated from Albemarle County High School in Virginia. She later attended and graduated from Piedmont Virginia Community College with an associate degree in accounting. After graduating from Piedmont, she attended one successful year at James Madison University. She chose not to return to James Madison for her final year. She, at that time, wanted to put more time into the work environment.

She was offered several banking and accounting positions but turned them down. The work that she did was what she enjoyed doing. She spent many years working for The Daily Progress newspaper. She also worked for Holiday Exxon in Charlottesville, and other various convenient stores and service stations. Some of these positions were cashier and some were management. She did not seem to care which title she held. As long as she was part of their team, her job was fulfilling and satisfying.

Other than fueling the economy and providing for moderate needs, Harriet was not very concerned about the value of money. She often gave money to others who she felt were in need. She adored children and was always concerned if she thought someone with a child may need help in any way. Harriet was so willing to give in such a way that she may help someone else, she even donated her body to science.

Harriet lived a life of her choice, as her mother would say, she did it her way. She was known and loved by many. Unfortunately, she began to encounter various health issues during her last several years of life. She was grateful and her family is grateful for her long-term friend of more than thirty-three years, Mr. Ralph Goffney. He provided her with a lot of assistance and care.

Her memory shall live on forever within her family and friends. Her mother, Dr. Anita Rae Smith-Pankey; father, Dr. Titus Pankey Jr. (decease); her long-term friend, Ralph Goffney; her daughter in love, Angela Castellan and husband, Jose Luis; four siblings, Titus Pankey III and wife, Manuela, Anita Rae Joyner and friend, Stevie Brown, Alan Titus Pankey (decease), and Ceasar Sam Titus Pankey (decease); her grandchildren in love, Christopher, Jason, and Aaron; her nieces and nephew, Nicole W.
