In Memory

Gregory Charles Snyder - Class Of 1966

Gregory Charles Snyder, 72, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on February 10, 2021, at home.

Born on October 10, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, Greg was the son of Adolpheus Lee Snyder and Priscilla Elizabeth (Schieb) Snyder. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Greg lived his early years in Ohio and moved to Charlottesville in middle school. He went to Albemarle High School and loved playing on the football team, completing his senior season as quarterback in the fall of 1965. In the middle of his senior year he moved to Jackson, Tennessee with his family where he graduated high school in 1966. He studied at the University of Tennessee until 1968, but left college early to head back to the town he loved, Charlottesville, Virginia. Here in Hooville he apprenticed in custom cabinetry, learning design and renovation along the way and began his own business "Projex". He held strong humanitarian values and was an artist in practical philosophy. Greg was a fixture on the local restaurant scene and was always making friends wherever he went. He built an impressive portfolio of private and commercial renovation projects completed around town. The most prominent included Maya Restaurant, Zocalo, The Terraces, and most of the spaces in the IX Art Park including the event space. He was a talented designer and could figure out the best way to creatively use any space. He loved his family immensely and visited his daughter and her family every weekend for pancakes (with extra butter) and bacon on Saturdays. He was deeply rooted in habit and loved watching all sports, especially UVA football and basketball. There was not a crossword puzzle he could not solve, and he was devoted to keeping up with the news in the local newspaper. He will be missed by many.

Mr. Snyder is survived by his daughter, Aven Kinley and her husband, Andrew and their children, Sawyer and Macey Kinley of Charlottesville, Virginia.; sister, Karen Schoonover of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; brother, Jeffrey Snyder of Charlottesville, Virginia.; brother, Todd Snyder and his wife, Margaret, of Birmingham, Alabama; nephews, Jake and Jessreal Snyder; niece, Jemel Snyder of Charlottesville, Virginia.; and nephew, Grant Snyder of Birmingham, Alabama.

Mr. Snyder will be privately cremated, and a service will be held Saturday April 10, 2021, when we can safely gather outside. More details to come as we approach that date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to: Habitat for Humanity, 967 2nd Street SE, Charlottesville, VA 22902, or Albemarle Housing Improvement (AHIP) 2127 Berkmar Drive Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Update for Greg's service in 2022:

Hello family and friends of my father Greg Snyder.

It has been close to one year since my father passed away and it is now time for a proper celebration of his life! I appreciate all of you bearing with me as I try to plan this event amid the unpredictability of living through a Global Pandemic. Hopefully Omicron will calm down and we can celebrate together safely. If you have received this email you are in no way obligated to attend. Please just know that I wanted to cast a wide net and make sure everyone that cared for my dad was aware of his celebration.

Here are the details about the event:

Sunday April 24, 2022 from 2-4 PM at the home of Larry Crawford, 3715 Pritchett Lane Charlottesville, VA 22911

We will have heavy hors d' ovoures and beverages along with a three piece Bluegrass trio. There will be an opportunity to tell stories and share memories along with a photo slideshow. If you have photos you would like to add please email them to my dad's sister Karen at: karenschoons24@gmail.com If you need to snail mail photos you can send them to me at the address below.

Dad had many friends that I am sure are scattered all over the country. If there is someone you know that you think would like to know about this event, please share this information with them. I will be texting and calling people to let them know about the event but any support spreading the word is MUCH appreciated.

Best wishes for 2022.

Love,

Aven
