Samuel Edward Beale, II - Class Of 1966

Samuel Edward Beale II, 70, of Charlottesville passed away on December 31, 2017, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born on November 11, 1947, to the late Kenneth Woodson and Elva Maitland Beale. He was married to Patricia Lingle Beale.

Early in his career, Sam was a realtor and director at the YMCA, but he's more well-known for his sports accolades. Sam was a coach and baseball instructor for most of his life: Pitching Coach and Assistant Coach at UVA for 12 years starting 1976, Head Coach for the Staunton Braves Valley Baseball League, and as Head Coach at Miller Baseball, where he built the program and took them to their first state championship in 2006. This is why he was well-known by many as "Dr. Baseball".

Outside of baseball, he was an avid golfer and a Pro Duckpin Bowler, his parents having started Terrace Bowl. He also helped open and run Keglers Bowling Center. Sam was recently accepted for the 2018 Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame. He showed his love for this country by serving honorably in the United States Navy.

Besides sports, Sam studied and was passionate about meteorology, music, and dancing. He was always the first person on and last person off the dance floor. He loved the beach, gardening, and most of all the snow.

Sam is survived by his wife, Patricia, two sons, Shane and Jason Beale; one daughter, Michelle Beale and husband, Mark Foran; and six grandchildren, Paige, Lacey, Kaitlyn, Riley, Caleb, and Lydia Beale. His memory will be cherished by his many friends, especially Jim Herndon, Dennis Womack, Kenny "Poon" Ballard, and Garland Cooper.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018, at First Baptist Church on Park St. in Charlottesville, with burial to follow at Monticello Memory Gardens. A celebration of life will be held afterwards at the Elk's Lodge.

The family will receive friends at Teague Funeral Home on Thursday, January 4, 2018, from 5 until 9 p.m.

In honor of Sammy, a baseball scholarship fund will be started in the coming months. For details on how to contribute, please contact his family.
