In Memory

Doris Jean Smith (Morris) - Class Of 1962

Doris Smith Morris, of Batesville, departed this life on Monday, August 9, 2021. She was born on December 2, 1943, in Massies Mill, Va., and moved to Batesville as a young girl.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Estelle Hendricks Smith and Harry Blanton Smith; her brother, Wilson Smith; and her beloved husband of almost 55 years, Henry "Hank" Morris.

Doris worked for many years at Acme Visible Records in Crozet, and then at the University of Virginia Payroll Department. She was a member of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Pilot Club, loving the service work and camaraderie she found with her other Pilot ladies.

She was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Batesville and treasured her church family. She loved to knit caps for the babies at MJ Hospital and was a voracious reader. She was a second mother to many, and loved no role better than that of a doting grandmother.

She leaves behind a daughter, Deena Hambsch and her husband, Karl. She had one treasured grandchild, Nora, whom she loved beyond all measure. She is also survived by a large extended family, including much loved sisters-in-law and special nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Doris' life will be held at a later date. If so moved, the family ask that donations made in honor of Doris be made to The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, 29 Stagebridge Rd., Lovingston, VA 22949 or The Holy Cross Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 12, Batesville, VA 22924.
