Norman Harris Kindrick - Class Of 1955

Norman Harris Kindrick, aged 80, passed away at his home in Free Union, on June 17, 2019, after a long illness.

He was born on June 25, 1938, to the late A.B. and Ethel Via Kindrick of Free Union.

He is survived by his wife and partner of 60 years, Marjorie Corell Kindrick; and their three children and six grandchildren, Dr. Diane Kindrick Pappas and her husband, Ted Pappas and their children, Elizabeth, John, Emily, and Anne; Norman Harris Kindrick Jr. and his wife, Leslie and their son, Norman Harris Kindrick III; Wallace Kindrick and his wife, Amy and their daughter, Katie Via.

He graduated from Albemarle High School and worked for 30 years as a field engineer for National Cash Register (later AT&T), servicing cash registers and bank machines throughout Central Virginia. He valued work and would not miss a day.  A blizzard that would be seen as a snow day by most would find him at the job that much earlier on the remote chance the business would open at all. His father had once made the pages of The Daily Progress for swimming across the flooded Moormans River to get to work after the bridge washed out.  He was every bit his father’s son.  After retirement, he worked for another 19 years as a driver for Enterprise in Charlottesville.

He and his wife, Marjorie, attended Meadows Presbyterian Church for nearly 30 years prior to his illness, though he never parted with his lifelong membership at the Free Union Church of the Brethren. The two celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in November, 2018. They traveled by car across the country many times over the past 20 years, visiting all 48 contiguous states, Alaska, and Canada. Along the way, he enjoyed adding to his collection of antique toy cars, tractors and farm implements.  He enjoyed and had vast knowledge of local history and genealogy garnered through his deep roots in the community.

A visitation will be held Thursday, June 20, 2019, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Hill & Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019, 2 p.m. at the Meadows Presbyterian Church.  Burial will be immediately following at the Free Union Church of the Brethren Cemetery. His final resting place lies just beyond a group of oak trees, once saplings in his great-grandfather’s field. The family will receive friends at their home immediately after the burial.

Special thanks to everyone who cared for him at the University of Virginia Health System, Encompass Physical Therapy, Hospice of the Piedmont, and the many others who supported him and his family during his illness.
