Betty Marie Garrison (Shiflett) - Class Of 1955

Betty Marie Shiflett, 81, from Mt. Sidney, Va., passed on to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, February 15, 2019.

Born in Charlottesville, Va. and raised in the Browns Cove United Methodist Church, Betty spent most of her young life running the fields, milking cows and tending the garden on the family farm in Browns Cove. She loved and cared for her immediate family and spent much of her life caring for their needs.

Following her marriage to her husband of 50 years, she spent her life maintaining a home, raising two children and moving her fingers to create beautiful handmade quilts, afghans, scarves, clothes, doll houses and dolls, which were often gifts of love to family, friends and Haitian Children. She had a great love for music and animals, especially cows and dogs, and fed many a stray.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William L. Shiflett; mother, Mary Mae and father, Ray Samuel Garrison; sisters, Anne Jane Garrison and Virginia Morris; and brothers, Clifton and Samuel Garrison.

She is survived by her daughter and family, Tammy and Charlie Thornton, granddaughter, Anna Marie and grandson, James Robert Thornton; son, Troy William Shiflett, and granddaughter, Alena Rae. Fortunately, her final days were spent in the comfort and safety of their home. She also is survived by a very special sister-in-law, Dorothy McAllister; nieces and nephews who shared in her life since birth and brought much joy and comfort.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2019, at the Prize Hill Cemetery, in Free Union, Va. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, any and all contributions should be made to Prize Hill Cemetery or the Charlottesville SPCA.
