David Sandhage

        David K. Sandhage, 59, of rural Jennings County IN, passed away at University of Louisville Hospital, Louisville, KY on Monday, May 19, 2014, after a tragic fall at his farm.

David was born on June 16, 1954 in Seymour, the son of Edward C. and Gertrude A. Surenkamp Sandhage.

He graduated from Seymour High School, in 1972, and from Indiana University in 1977 with a B.S. in Education. David received his Certification in Special Education from Eastern Kentucky University.

He was married to Cathy J. Bode, on May 14, 1977, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Seymour. David spent his entire career as an educator, having taught at Jennings County Middle School for 11 years and was currently a special education resource teacher at Trinity Lutheran High School.

Upon returning to IN, in 1999, he purchased his grandparents' farm, which has been in the Sandhage family for over 100 years and designated a Hoosier Homestead Farm. Mr. Sandhage was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he served his congregation as a member of the Stephen's Ministry, Missions Board and Evangelism Board. He also was a past member of the Gideon's Bible Society and a board member for the Pregnancy Care Center.

During his time at Trinity Lutheran High School, David was the faculty advisor for the National Honor Society, advisor to the Mock Trial team and led a Missions trip to Nicaragua in 2012. He was an Eagle Scout, photographer, and beekeeper. He enjoyed making maple syrup and loved his woodland walks with his dogs.

David is survived by his wife of 37 years, Cathy; daughter; Diana Moser, grandsons: Tanner and Ty Moser, brother, Douglas (Marianne) Sandhage, and sister, Kay (Dan) Lueken. David is also survived by mother-in-law, Jean Bode; brothers-in-law: Anthony (Ginger) Bode, James (Carlla) Bode, Mark (Patricia) Bode and sisters-in-law: Beth (Michael) Elsner and Marsha (Frank) Beach. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014, at Immanuel Lutheran Church where Revs. James Rodriguez, Philip Bloch, Ralph Blomenberg and Vicar Mark Huff will officiate. Visitation will be at Burkholder Funeral Chapel, on Thursday, from 2-8 p.m. and on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Burial will take place at St. John's White Creek Lutheran Cemetery after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Trinity Lutheran High School, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Immanuel Lutheran School, St. Ambrose Catholic School and St. John's Lutheran School, White Creek.
