Homer Kline

 Homer Milton Kline, Jr., 94 of King George passed away Friday, May 19, 2017.  Born in Broadway, Virginia, he graduated from Broadway High School in 1940.  He entered Bridgewater College in the fall of that year and in 1942 he interrupted his education to enlist in the United States Army.  He served in the South Pacific and in Japan after the Japanese surrendered.  After the war he resumed his studies at Bridgewater and graduated in 1947.  Later in his career he received his Master's degree from the University of Virginia.

    Homer's life was dedicated to public education, fraternal and civic organizations, church, family and friends.  His career included time as an athletic coach and teacher at Keezletown High School in Rockingham County, Principal and girls' basketball coach at Wakefield High School in Sussex County, Assistant Principal at Albemarle High School, Superintendent of Schools in Louisa, Amelia and King George Counties and for the towns of Colonial Heights and Colonial Beach.

    He retired from full time public education in 1981 and worked part-time for UVA and the State Board of Education in the Beginning Teacher Assistance Program, where he assisted first year teachers in central Virginia.  He also assisted his wife, Virginia at her Greenbrier Preschool in King George.

    Homer loved to read, listen to and play Bluegrass music and attend JMU basketball and football games with his son Milton.  He was active in his church, Lions Club and was a 60 plus year member of the Ruritan Club.  Homer also devoted 64 years to the Masonic Fraternity.  He was Past Master of Colonial Beach Lodge #199, Past High Priest of Westmoreland Royal Arch #41.  He was the Grand Marshal of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Virginia in 1989.  He was a Past Commander of Fredericksburg Commandery #1 and he was a Shriner and a member of the Jesters.  He also was a member of various York Rite appendant bodies.

    Homer was a descendant of John Kline and Elder Daniel Hayes, both ministers of the Church of the Brethren and educators.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Milton and Olive Sites Kline.  He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Roadcap Kline; his son, Milton Kline (Linda); his grandson, Erik Kline; his great grandson, Cayden Kline; family friend and caregiver, Cheryl Wood and several nieces and nephews.

    A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 23rd at 2:00pm in Hollywood Church of the Brethren 225 Ferry Road, Fredericksburg.  The family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to the service.  A luncheon will immediately follow.  Private burial will take place later at Linville Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Broadway.
