Michael Lee Wingfield - Class Of 1976

Michael Lee Wingfield, 65, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mike is survived by his wife of 44 years, Vickie Wood Wingfield; their children, Amanda Meck and Robert Wingfield; their granddaughter, Chloie Meck-Brice; and his sister, Becky Wingfield Weldon. Mike was preceded in death by his father, William L Wingfield; his mother, Rose L. Wingfield; and his brother, William L. Wingfield, Jr.

Mike was a life-long resident of Charlottesville, graduating from Albemarle High School in 1976. He attended Piedmont Virginia Community College and earned an Associate of Arts and Business degree from Western International University. His career spanned more than 40 years in drafting, operations and project management, most recently at Northrop Grumman as a manufacturing engineer, and at National Optronics as a Quality Inspector and later a Q.A. Engineer.

Mike will be most remembered as an avid outdoorsman. He was active with the Boy Scout community the majority of his life in various roles, including Scoutmaster for Troop 37 in Charlottesville. He enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with others and taking many friends and acquaintances to hunt rabbit and waterfowl. He enjoyed fishing and was an expert at tying flies for trout fishing. He also enjoyed training beagles and Labrador retrievers to retrieve and follow complex commands. When not outdoors, Mike could many times be found playing in local billiard tournaments or pursuing additional family history facts and stories.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Mt Olivet United Methodist Church, 2500 Old Lynchburg Road, North Garden, Virginia 22959. The church will be open at 1 p.m. EST for family and friends to reconnect and view a video of Mike’s life. A brief graveside service will be held immediately following the memorial service where Mike’s cremains will be laid to rest in the church’s nearby cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Mike requested memorial contributions be directed to the North Garden Fire Department, P.O. Box 33, North Garden, Virginia 22959, or to Mt Olivet United Methodist Church.
