Elgie Russell Sims Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a long hard battle with different illnesses. He loved life and he fought hard.
He was born on June 23, 1953, to the late Elgie Russell Simms Sr. and Dora Lee Jones Sims. Elgie was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Greenwood, Virginia, and later attended Evergreen Ministries in Charlottesville. He was a graduate of Albemarle High School class of 1972. He was an outstanding basketball player and was offered a scholarship to Shenandoah University but decided not to accept. Elgie worked for 30 years at Con Agra (Delmonte) where he was promoted to supervisor. Elgie was not only loved by his family but by classmates, golfing buddies, co-workers and childhood friends. His greatest pastime was golfing and fishing especially with his brother. His sport favorites were Tiger Woods and Lebron James.
He leaves to cherish his memories, three daughters Kimberly K. Sanchez and her husband, Enriques, of Waynesboro, Candance M. Johnson and her husband, Glen, of London and Felicia Diggs Hagwood of Crimora Virginia; a stepson, Robert W. "Bobby" Jones III of Esmont; a grandson, Enrique Sanchez; a granddaughter, Jaya Diggs Hagwood; five sisters, Loretta S. Dickerson, Etta H. Woodfolk and her husband, Charles, all of Charlottesville, Janet M. Sims of Ivy, Nancy L. Diggs of Waynesboro and Catherine S. Sims of Greenwood; a brother, Stuart C. Sims and his wife, Bernita, of Greenwood; a longtime friend Debbie Jones; four aunts, one uncle and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at Evergreen Ministries, 2331 Seminole Lane, Charlottesville with the Rev. Stanley Woodfolk officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Yancey Mills, Va.The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. J. F. Bell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
