Mary Gaston Caperton

Mary Gaston Caperton, 57, of Charlottesville, died on Monday, March 7, 2011.

She was predeceased by parents, Bernard Mason Caperton and Nancy Graney Caperton.

She is survived by sisters, Kathryn Caperton Wright and her husband, Doug, Mason Caperton Hood and her husband, Charlie, of Richmond, and Emily Day Whitworth and her husband, Chip, of Crozet; brothers, Douglas Turner Day IV and his wife, Sally Barbee, of Staunton, and Ian Christopher Day and Lucinda Ewell of Charlottesville; stepmother, Mary Hill Caperton and Thomas Hughes of Charlottesville.

Mary Gat is also survived by a large, close knit family. She loved her nephews and nieces, Timothy, Mary Mason and Nancy Wright; Philip and Kathryn Hood; Hayden, Turner, Janie Day, and Jack Whitworth; Robin and Emily Day; and Andrew Ewell. She will be missed by an endless list of Caperton and Graney cousins from West, by God, Virginia. She would not want us to neglect her loving cat, Araminta, who carries on as the last in a long line of feline companions.

Mary Gat graduated from Albemarle High School in 1971 and from Washington College in 1975. After living in Chestertown, Maryland, she returned to Charlottesville and worked for Southwestern Life and then joined her mother as a realtor nearly 30 years ago.

Mary Gat loved Charlottesville and had many friends who helped her in recent years; please know that the family deeply appreciates your love and kindness. These include Cornelia Johnson, Sara and Fred Schroeder, Sharon Graney Bibb and Thomas Bibb, Diane Johnson, Loretta Hirschfeld, The Bloody Group, and the fine folks at Roy Wheeler.

A memorial service to remember Mary Gat will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 201 North First Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Guests will be received beginning at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary Gat's honor to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, 3355 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901 (at www.caspca.org), or the charity of your choice.
