I remember the terrible football accident that almost ended Woody's life when he was in High School. But he fought back -- and made a miraculous recovery. I remember his friendliness, his sweet spirit, and his courage. We will miss him!

I, too, remember that devastating injury.  Not only was I on the field with him when he was hit (all of us 3rd-stringers got into the game, finally), but we were side by side at practice when he collapsed.  That Monday night was one of the worst of my memories of AHS.  Woody and I were also co-sports editors of the yearbook that year, and I missed his help and VERY good suggestions for the rest of the year.  It is good to know that he had a family and a fairly long life.

Woody was a wonderful friend, classmate and teammate.

I had the good fortune of playing baseball and football with him.

Unfortunately, the baseball injury the spring prior to his football injury almost certainly contributed to his later football injury. You sometimes get athletic injuries and Woody had a couple of really horrific ones -- but -- he did not get injured by standing around -- he gave all out effort every minute and was a contributor to his teams.

I was amazed at his determination to overcome the devastating injuries and after effects and had heard, with much happiness, that he had attended / graduated from Elon College in N.C. and had become a wonderful husband / father and was successful in his career.

I still tell some Woody stories after all of these years ; he was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.

Ed Herring, '64
