In Memory

Bennett Hosea Barnes III - Class Of 1964

Bennett and I were in school from as long as I can remember - Belfield at the quonset hut on 29N, then to its current location. All 4 years at AHS, playing football at least the one year I played. We both started at Hampden-Sydney together, until I left in January 1966. I had heard that sometime between 1966 and 1968 he had been killed in an automobile accident on his way to/from HSC on route 20.

Information submitted by William "Bill" Eastwood.

Per an article in the February 24, 1968, edition of The Danville Register, Bennett died February 23, 1968, as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident in which he was a passenger.

Bennett & I too attended Belfield's classes in the old quonset hut off Rt. 29 north.  Bennett, I think, started the AHS golf team & asked me to join.  I know we all had a lot of fun playing different high school teams on a lot of different local courses, but I cannot remember if we won any matches!!!  Tayloe Wise

I sat in front of Bennett in a number of classes...and definitely in Home Room for many of our years together at AHS. What a funny, smart, and clever guy he was! I was shocked to hear of his death...and saddened that his brilliant destiny was not fulfilled. But I have many fond memories, and remember him as a wonderful friend and good student!
