Joe was a really good athlete for our day. We could almost always depend on him for some good yardage when he carried the ball. Most of the rest of us on the team wished we had his athletic ability and were glad we didn't have to play against him. Joe could have flaunted his athleticism but didn't; he was another of the Crozet area guys from a working class background who was humble and not into exploiting his achievements on the athletic fields. Sorry to hear of his somewhat early passing as the result of what I understand may have been a genetic heart condition.  When I remember my days on the different ball teams at AHS, I often remember Joe and can see him barreling through the line or around end with defenders in hot pursuit. Besides his athletic gifts, he had an easy and great smile too. Proud to have played with Joe. Dan Falwell '63

My memories of Joe Strickler were similar to Danny's. I played football with Joe one year and was always amazed that he was in such phenomenal condition. He was a man playing football with boys. But I also remember Joe was always upbeat and friendly to everyone, including lower classmates. He was a real gentleman and every sense of the word. I too considered it a privilege to be on the team with people like Joe and Danny, and others.
