HAYES - Leslie Marvin Cason "Les" or "Mr. C" passed away June 10, 2009, after a brief illness of cancer at the age of 70.
He was born April 3, 1939, in Richmond, Va., to Leslie McQuire Cason and Margaret Fox Cason, both preceding him in death. Les moved to Charlottesville, Va., as a young boy and was a 1956 graduate of Albermarle High School. He was employed at Sperry Rand and Colonial Stores before moving to Newport News, Va., in 1966. He worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, now Northrop Grumman, for 33 years in the Quality Inspection Department, retiring in 1999.
Les and his family moved to Gloucester County in 1974, and in 1976 he joined the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. He was a life member, Vice President, served on the Board of Directors and performed his community services proudly. He was voted honorary member of the Gloucester Fire and Rescue Department June 1, 2009, and he was extremely honored. Les was a member of Union Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shelby H. Cason; daughter, Renee Powell and husband, Ronald; granddaughter, Jessica Powell, all of Hayes, Va.; three sisters, Shirley Motley and husband, Dale of Prospect, Va., Margie Davis and husband, Ronnie of Earlysville, Va., Lois Gilbert of Stanardsville, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews and he adored everyone of them; a special brother-in-law, Calvin Roberts of Charlottesville, Va.; his extended family, Steve Singleton, David Townsend, David Shortt and family, Robert Seaford and family and Bill and Aileen Hogge and Pete Dunston.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Friday evening at Union Baptist Church, followed by services beginning at 7 p.m. The Rev. Bill West, the Rev. Patrick Coffey and the Rev. Richard Whiteheart will officiate. Interment will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, in Holly Memorial Garden Cemetery, Charlottesville, Va.
Special thanks go to his Union Baptist Church family for all the prayers and support throughout his illness, to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, the staff at Peninsula Cancer Institute, Williamsburg, Va., Williamsburg Sentara Hospital and Norfolk Sentara Hospital and the Hospice House of Williamsburg.
