Maxine Venona Shifflett - Class Of 1955

 

Maxine Venona Shifflett of Charlottesville died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, with her family by her side. 

Born March 9, 1938, in Charlottesville, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Monroe Shifflett and Hester Morris Shifflett.

 She is survived by her sisters, Irma Shifflett of Charlottesville, Virginia, Betty Lou Boyd and her husband, Frank, of Roanoke, Virginia; nephew, Scott Craver and family, Darlene Berry, Stephanie and D.J. Berry of Shenandoah, Virginia; nephew, Stephen Craver and his wife, Tammi, and their children, Tiernan and Porter of Weyers Cave, Virginia; and extended family including cousins and good friends.

Maxine was a member of the 1955 graduating class of Albemarle High School.In 1956, she began her working career as a teller with Centel, then known as the Virginia Telephone and Telegraph Company in Charlottesville, Virginia. She became a Certified Professional Secretary and during her years of service at Centel, held positions as Directory Clerk and Secretary to local Business Office Manager. Moves to Martinsville, Virginia and Hickory, North Carolina, saw Maxine expand her career as Manager for Safety and Training and Director of Budget for the Virginia and North Carolina Divisions. She retired from Centel in 1993 after 37 years of service.

Maxine belonged to the National Secretaries Association and was an active member of the Centel public service group known as The Pilot Club.

She was a skilled, avid crafter who enjoyed crochet, cross-stitch, ceramics, rubber stamping and leaves a legacy of artwork cherished by her family and friends.

When able, she attended Bethel Baptist Church in Palmyra, Virginia. Her deep faith in God and love of family are an inspiration to all who knew her.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Teague Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Buddy Woodson officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2008, at Teague Funeral Home.
