Ethel Maxine Riley (Phelps) - Class Of 1955

Maxine Riley Phelps Maxine Riley Phelps, 75, of Charlottesville, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014.

She was born on September 30, 1938, in Albemarle County to the late Sidney Franklin Riley and Willie Ann Kirby Riley. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, Otto, Sidney, and Hawthorne Riley.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years Harlan E. Phelps Jr.; by her daughter, Carol Phelps Currier; and by her grandchildren, Brittani Currier Meney, McKenzie Currier, and Zachary Currier. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter, Carley Meney; her sisters, Delsie Harrup, Mary Price and Amelia Fox; her dear neighbors and caregivers, Marie and Anthony Marshall; and her dearly loved Chihuahua guard dogs, Lady and Princess.

She graduated from Albemarle County High School and the Martha Jefferson nurse Training in 1955 and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked as a nurse for Martha Jefferson Hospital and Martha Jefferson Infirmary, before retiring in 2000. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a very strong supporter of her husband's endeavors as a Freemason.

The family is grateful for the very compassionate and loving care provided by Drs. Robert Pritchard, Hendrix, Spaulding, Lowdon and their nurses and staff during Maxine's illness with inflammatory breast cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Al Horton officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
