Verley Gibson, Sr. - Class Of 1955

Verley Lawrence Gibson, Sr. son of the late Arthur and Nellie Gibson Gibson died Friday, May 7, 2004 at his home in Lady Lake, Florida at the age of 70.

Born January 28, 1934, Verley attended Meriwether Lewis School and Miller School of Albemarle. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Ivy and served as Chairman of the Cemetery Committee. Verley retired from the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. After the Navy, he retired from the US Postal Service. He was a letter carrier in Charlottesville's Belmont Community. Verley moved to Faber and in 1997 moved to Florida where he could play golf every day.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Peggy Dempster Gibson; a son Verley Lawrence Gibson, Jr. and his wife, Janet and their daughter, Verley's only grandchild, Rachel of Mount Holly, North Carolina; and a daughter, Kelly Sue Gibson of Florida.

He leaves behind two brothers, William "Bill" Gibson and his wife Alma of Crozet, Luther Gibson and his wife Nancy of Crozet; and two sisters, Frances Gibson Loose and her husband Hermann of Keswick, Nellie Louise Gibson Haney and her late husband Milton Haney of Charlottesville; as well as nieces, Brenda, Terri, Tracy, Sherri, Mary and Frieda and their families; and nephews, Michael, David, Donald, and Dennis and their families.

A private service was held in Lady Lake, Florida where
Verley was cremated. Peggy, his children and family
scattered his ashes over St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

The family requested donations be sent to St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church Cemetery Fund, PO Box 351, Ivy, Virginia 22945 in memory of Verley.
