Novella Ann Ray (Mawyer) - Class Of 1954

Novella Ray Mawyer, 81, passed away peacefully Monday morning, January 15, 2018, at UVA Medical Center surrounded by her family after suffering a fatal stroke.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William "Sonny" Mawyer; and their three children, Todd, Tara, and Travis. She is also survived by her only granddaughter, Sierra McLeod. There are also numerous nieces and nephews, of which she enjoyed a close relationship with Linda Bass of Norfolk, Va.

Novella was a member of the very first graduation class of Albemarle High School in 1954. She was the owner and operator of Lazy Daisy Ceramics, which she opened in 1977. She was a very talented artist who loved painting, ceramics, and meeting new people. She loved to teach classes at the shop, working there right up to her death. She also taught at the Senior Center.

She was full of life and enthusiasm, having a positive influence on many people's lives. She especially loved being a doting grandmother. She loved going to the beach with her family and was adored by her two companion animals, Molly and Daisy. Novella loved all animals, supported the SPCA, and enjoyed watching and feeding the birds in her yard. Active right up until her injury, she had been a bowler, a golfer, and a supporter of UVA sports. She was also an active member of the Doe Club for many years.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlottesville. All family and friends are welcome to join us in this celebration of her life, her love, and her positive impact upon us all.
