Henry Riley Morris - Class Of 1954

Henry Riley "Hank" Morris, departed this earth on Monday, March 5, 2018. He spent the last evening of his life surrounded by the love of his family.

Henry was born on February 3, 1936, to Daniel Harmon and Leither Riley Morris in Albemarle County, of which he was a lifelong resident.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Louise Mawyer, Mary Leither Morris, and Alice Matheny; and six brothers, Daniel, James, Barney, Milton, Samuel, and Frederick.

He is survived by three sisters, Mildred (Richard) Rohm, Catherine (James) Rose, and Virginia (Jerry) Taylor; and two brothers, Harvey (Ann Paige) Morris, and Homer Morris; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and one special nephew-in-law, Eric May.

Henry attended Red Hill School in North Garden and graduated from Albemarle High School in Charlottesville. He turned down a full scholarship to attend college because he felt he needed to help support his family and younger siblings. His love for learning never faltered, and he usually read 2-3 novels a week and completed a daily crossword up until a few months before his death. Henry served his country in the Army and then worked for Pitney Bowes for many years, enjoying the various cast of characters he would meet each day.

Henry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris Smith Morris. They often had a strange way of showing it, but Henry and Doris were totally devoted to each other. She never left his side in the last months of his life. Henry leaves behind one daughter, Deena Hambsch and her husband, Karl. He was a wonderful father and grandfather, doting on his granddaughter, Eleanor "Nora" Riley Hambsch. To him, she was and always will be "The Kid".

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Piedmont, especially Kelly Ottman, and all the friends and family who continue to give so much love and support.

A Family Night will be held at Hill & Wood Funeral Home on Thursday, March 8, 2018, from 6 until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 9, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Batesville.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to: The Almost Home Adoption Center of the Nelson County SPCA/Humane Society, 29 Stagebridge Road, Lovingston, VA 22949, or The Cemetery Fund of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 12, Batesville, VA 22924.
